Energy Education

Energy education is part of our obligations towards a sustainable future. How we use energy has a profound effect on our environment, our economy, and our quality of life. Every time we flip a switch or drive our car, we burn fuel, which can have an impact on local air and water quality. As educators we have a responsibility to share our knowledge with and assist schools at all levels in this important task ‘Energy Education’.

We essentially require energy in three main areas: kinetic energy (to drive cars, trucks, etc.), electrical energy (to power our appliances and for lighting, etc.) and thermal energy (to heat water, cooking, etc.).

Not withstanding, energy involves generation on one side and utilisation on the other side. Matching the type of energy source to the application will ensure better use of our resources. For example, heating water is best done using solar energy in the first instance. Converting a form of energy to another involves losses. Burning coal in a power station results in losses of nearly 60%. Petrol burnt in the internal combustion engine results in less than 25% power at the wheel. An electric car on the other hand is at least twice as efficient as a petrol-driven car taking into account the efficiency of the battery. To assure the best use of resources and the most responsible environmental action, the entire energy-use cycle and its environmental consequences must be considered, from extraction through conversion, delivery and use.

What we can offer:

• Develop educational material to suit students of different age groups.
• Provide information to teachers on fundamentals of power and energy calculations and applications to energy auditing in homes and offices.

Energy Education for schools
• Give advice and presentations on energy efficiency measures
around the homes or school environment.
• Advice on various technologies using solar thermal, photovoltaic, wind, and other energy resources.
• Consulting on the use of and applications of photovoltaic panels, their economic and environmental
benefits in the education context.
• Develop educational material on the fundamentals and applications of various energy technologies.
• Develop activities and/or experiments for measurements of solar radiation and the effect of changing
orientation.
• Develop activities and/or experiments to characterise photovoltaic panels, current and voltage output
at certain radiation and temperature.
• Develop activities and/or experiments to show the effect of temperature, the effect of partial shading
on the performance of photovoltaic panels.
